Bucharest, Nov 24, : , The two chambers representing the Romanian Parliament elected new leaders.
Marcel Ciolacu (chair of the Social Democratic Party) was elected Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies (lower House of Parliament) with 217 votes for and 77 against, reports Xinhua news agency.

This position has been vacant since 18 October, when Ludovic Orban (ex-leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), resigned and announced his resignation from the party following losing re-election.

With 82 votes in favor and 25 against, Florin Citu, the current leader of the PNL, was elected president (upper house) of the Senate.

She defeated Anca Dragu (Save Romania Union), who ran again after she was removed earlier in the day.

Citu, who is also the caretaker prime minister, will assume his new position on November 19, following the investiture by the new government.

The major changes in the composition of Parliament majority led to the election of the parliamentary leadership.After the USR’s withdrawal, PSD formed a new three party coalition with PNL and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania.

USR announced that it would leave the ruling coalition in September.Citu’s minority cabinet collapsed on October 5, in a parliamentary vote of no confidence.

Monday saw the formation of a coalition government by the PSD, PNL, and UDMR.

President Klaus Iohannis quickly nominated Nicolae Ceuca, who was proposed by the new coalition to form a new government as soon possible.
