Thiruvananthapuram : , In a rare case of a serving State Police Chief being granted an extension, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced Wednesday that Anil Kant, the current State Police chief, was extended to June 30, 2023.The tenure of Anil Kant, which was due to expire on January 31, next year, was extended. This directive will give Kant a full two-year term as the state police chief.It will also eliminate the chances of a few juniors getting to the top.The biggest loser will be B.Sandhya who could have been the first woman Police Chief in Kerala.
In the recent past, such a long extension to a state police chief has never happened in the state.
Kant has remained largely anonymous since he was appointed the new chief of state police on July 1, and has not been the subject of any controversy.
In a matter of minutes, this is the second surprise Vijayan has done.The other day, the Vice-Chancellor of Kannur University Gopinath Raveendran was granted a four-year extension.
This was even though he was the subject of an ongoing controversy where many believe he was the private secretary to Vijayan — K.K.Priya Varghese, Ragesh’s spouse, was appointed Associate Professor at the University in Malayalam.This is allegedly in violation UGC rules.
