This is in an effort make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists as well as drivers.
These intersection points, also known as blackspots, were identified at Mukundpur Chowk and Nirkankari Colony.

“There are many intersections in the capital where fatal accidents happen on a regular basis. The Delhi government is committed making roads safer for all.We aim to create a comprehensive network for safe roads and junctions throughout the city through these interventions. These interventions can drive the behavior change required from commuters and the general population to allow safe road practices in cities,” Kailash Gahlot (Delhi Transport Minister) said Wednesday when he inaugurated the Tactical Urbanism trials at Rajghat.

These TU interventions and trials are done in collaboration with SaveLife Foundation.

These are quick, temporary and relatively inexpensive interventions that test urban design, transportation planning, and infrastructural improvements for improving road safety for all road users.

Road space will be redistributed to ensure modal equality, traffic flow channelised, vehicular speeds reduced, and safety infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists added.

Before Rajghat, a similar test was conducted at BhalswaChowk — a blindspot designated by the National Highway Authority of India.

Eight to nine deaths were reported each year.

“Since the trials at BhalswaChowk, the number and fatalities at this particular spot have decreased.” Gahlot stated that Rajghat and the 13 other points will achieve similar results.

Ashish Kundra, Commissioner of Transport, stated that the objective of these trials was to insert safety elements for all road users.

Rajghat Intersection, Rajghat Bus Depot have collectively seen 47 crashes, 13 deaths and 51 injuries since 2016.

These trails take two months to complete.

We will examine how the design formation affects traffic movement and most importantly, how it is being seen by pedestrians. If it is successful, we will give this design as an approved design to the Public Works Department (PWD).To make it permanent.Piyush Tewari, CEO of SaveLife Foundation, said that a pedestrian plaza could be built, just as in Rajghat.

“At Rajghat alone six studies were done including pedestrian volume counts and traffic volume counts as well as geospatial studies. The purpose of these studies was to understand the fundamental problems with the current design.

When we do the impact study, the evaluation study will be mapped on to the original study to see if any changes have occurred,” he said.
