Chennai, November 23, : , Tamil Nadu farmers have filed a petition with the state agricultural department seeking compensation for their losses in the floods. Around 1,50,000 ha of cropland was damaged by the torrential rains.
This resulted in loss of Bengal gram and millets, as well as rice.
Banana growers were also hit by the floods and rains, which resulted in a crop loss of more than 60%.
Cuddalore farmers claimed that 22,000 acres were affected by the Thenpennai floods, which caused damage to crops such as black gram, cotton and vegetables.

Swaminathan, a black gram farmer from Cuddalore said to IANS that he had already filed for compensation to the district administration.He received word that the agricultural department and the district administration would hold a joint sitting of the farmers’ associations in order decide on any compensation.”We expect fair compensation.”
At a Mayiladuthurai meeting between officials from the agriculture department and the farmers association, they demanded Rs.30,000 per acre of compensation for crops that were completely destroyed and Rs.10,000 to replant crops damaged by rain.
The department of agriculture will do a thorough study on the losses of farmers across Tamil Nadu.

The excessive amount water has also caused yellowing which has adversely affected our business.
The rains also had a negative impact on livestock farmers, particularly poultry farmers.Tamil Nadu has large poultry farms.
Mukundadas of the Paddy Farmers Association of Myladuthurai said that Mukundadas was the president of IANS.
He stated: “It’s heartening to see that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has taken care of Agriculturists” and instructed the Agriculture Department to conduct an immediate meeting with farmers and their representatives in order to compensate them for any crop loss.The decision was welcomed by us and we expect fair compensation from the agriculture department.
Manoharan Kumaran is the chief of the Coimbatore poultry farmers’ association.He said to IANS that they had lost many chickens due to the heavy rains.
However, they were optimistic about good sales in November and December.The loss of more than 3000 chickens in each farm has impacted the entire district, and the number of farms is over 100.We are very sorry for this loss.The state government should compensate us accordingly as they have been an important supplier of eggs and chickens both within the state and abroad.
IANS was informed by Agriculture Minister Paneerselvam that they are conducting a thorough study of the loss suffered farmers in the recent rains.They will also provide compensation to the leaders and officials of the farmer associations.Meetings will take place with farmers and officials.”The Chief Minister specifically directed us all to pay the compensation as quickly as possible,”
Fair compensation is also due to farmers in the areas of Madurai and Tirunelveli where heavy rains have destroyed their paddy fields.
Cumbom, a farmer in Theni who had been cultivating paddy on more than 20 acres told IANS that they were expecting Rs.30,000 per hectare in compensation.However, we don’t know what the final figure will be.The Chief Minister’s initiative to meet with affected farmers, as well as the agricultural minister and bureaucrats was admirable.
