AP SEC approaches HC challenging the ‘cancellation of Parishad polls’ verdict

Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner Neelam Sawhney has filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court challenging the cancellation of MPTC and ZPTC elections.Recently, the Andhra Pradesh High Court quashed the notification issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) on April 1 in connection with the ZPTC and MPTC elections in the state on April 8.The High court single bench ruled that the notification issued by Neelam Sawhney on April 1 was contrary to the directions given by the Supreme Court to impose four weeks of the Election Code before the polling date.

The High Court single bench has cancelled the Parishad elections.

SEC filed a petition in the Division Bench challenging the Single Bench rulings.AP High Court Judge Justice M Satyanarayana Murthy has directed the SEC to give fresh notification to conduct elections.

The High Court said that if the Election Commissioner’s request to consider the fact that Rs 160 crore had been spent on the conduct of the elections was considered, then the unlawful Parishad election process would become lawful.The petition is likely to be heard in the High Court tomorrow.

The petition filed by SEC Neelam Sawhney has become a hot topic in AP politics.
