Chennai, Dec 31 : Even though Tamil Nadu politics largely revolved around the two major parties — the ruling AIADMK and the DMK — in 2020, the resurgent state BJP unit and actor Rajinikanth’s decision to take a political plunge and the anti-climax of backing out too got good traction.

With the assembly polls to be held in 2021, the year also saw the AIADMK, the DMK and the Kamal Haasan floated Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) hitting the campaign trail.

The year on which the sun would set soon saw the AIADMK government led by Chief Minister K.Palaniswami managing the disasters that hit the state – coronavirus and Cyclone Nivar – efficiently, minimizing the loss of precious lives.

The state also became an attractive investment destination even during the Covid-19 year with the government signing about 80 Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) involving an outlay of about Rs.66,000 crore.

The year also saw an internal power struggle between AIADMK Coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator and Chief Minister Palaniswami over the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2021 assembly polls.

Finally, Panneerselvam announced that Palaniswami would be the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate.Party officials also said Palaniswami will be the AIADMK led alliance’s CM candidate.

Later, the two leaders at a state government function in which Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated voluntarily announced that the party’s alliance with the BJP would continue for the assembly polls.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu BJP which is in resurgence mode with disgruntled politicians from the DMK and other parties and celebrities joining it began to speak in a different tone that irked the AIADMK.

The Tamil Nadu BJP leaders started saying that as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), their national leadership will announce the Chief Ministerial candidate in Tamil Nadu.

Incidentally, the BJP fought the Lok Sabha polls under the leadership of the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu in 2019.

Barring one Lok Sabha seat that was won by the AIADMK, the alliance led by it had lost all the remaining 38 seats in the state.

“For the Lok Sabha polls BJP needed AIADMK.But the latter did not deliver. For the assembly elections, BJP does not need AIADMK but the reverse is true.

For the ruling party it has everything to gain unlike the BJP,” a political analyst not wanting to be quoted told IANS.

According to him, groups who are part of a failed alliance will grumble and complain and that is what is seen in the AIADMK alliance.

On the other hand, the DMK delivered in the Lok Sabha polls and its alliance partners are silent.

With the state BJP leaders’ voice becoming stronger, the AIADMK decided to give it back at its first poll campaign rally.

In no uncertain terms Deputy Coordinator K.P.Munusamy said at the rally that those parties nursing the wish of a coalition government should rethink.

Munusamy said there are leaders who are saying there is a possibility of change in the state away from the Dravidian parties after the death of Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi.

Rejecting such predictions, Munusamy said Tamil Nadu is the land of rationalist movement leader Periyar and the Dravidian movements did not allow the national parties into the state for the past 50 years.

It was clear that the message was for the BJP either to fall in line or exit.

Later Palaniswami also said the electoral alliance for the 2021 assembly polls will be formed under his party’s leadership.

Palaniswami said the alliance with the BJP is continuing and the alliance for the 2021 polls will be led by the AIADMK.

Meanwhile, the state BJP under the leadership of L.Murugan is gaining ground with several celebrities and leaders from the DMK, Congress and other parties joining it.

Murugan himself hit the streets with his Vetri Vel Yatra.

“The Yatra was started to teach a lesson to Karuppar Koottam that had insulted Kanda Shasti Kavacham – the prayer for Murugan.DMK and its allies are behind the Karuppar Koottam,” he had said.

According to him, in Tamil Nadu the BJP is a rising force with large numbers of people joining the party daily across the state.

Political analysts are of the view that the BJP’s strategy is to weaken both the AIADMK and the DMK and gain a firm foothold in Tamil Nadu. The analysts also said the BJP under the new leadership is gaining vote share – estimated to be about 10 per cent – and can get a firm foothold in Tamil Nadu.

On the other hand, the principal opposition party DMK is working towards its Mission 200 — winning not less than 200 seats in the 2021 assembly polls with its various campaign themes and modes — ‘Towards the Dawn Stalin’s Voice’ by 20 party leaders and video meetings on the theme ‘Rescue Tamil Nadu’.

The DMK is also holding meetings in the villages on the theme ‘We are rejecting AIADMK’.

DMK President M.K.Stalin, who will start his poll campaign in January, also urged his partymen to see that all the ministers of the AIADMK government who contest the elections are defeated.

Meanwhile the Vanniar caste party PMK, part of the ruling AIADMK alliance, has taken up the issue of 20 per cent reservation for the Vanniars in the state government educational institutions and jobs.

“It will enable to retain PMK’s vote share. It will be a gain for the party.

After four years of retreat, PMK is in an offensive mode now,” said a political analyst.

Declaring that the time has come to change the fate of Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth said political and government change in the state is important and a compulsion of time.

Sounding his poll bugle against the ruling AIADMK and DMK Rajinikanth said he would float his political party in January 2021 and an announcement in that regard will be made on December 31, 2020.

But on December 29, 2020, the actor announced his decision to back out from a political plunge citing his health condition and the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic.

The year also saw three politicians — DMK law maker J.Anbazhagan, Congress MP H.Vasanthakumar and state Agriculture Minister R.Doraikkannu — passing away due to Covid-19.
