Istanbul, Nov 30, : On Tuesday, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey’s western province, Izmir.There were no reports of casualties. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, (AFAD), announced on its website that the earthquake struck Izmir’s Urla in the Aegean Sea at 7 a.m.(0400 GMT).
“After the earthquake struck Urla, there have been no casualties or damages reported so far,” AFAD tweeted.They also added that “the field scanning work is ongoing in the region.”
Yasemin Boncuk (a 43-year old Izmir resident) told Xinhua by phone that the quake was accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds.He said, “I jumped out from the bed in fear.”
According to AFAD, nine minute after the first tremor, a 4.3 magnitude large aftershock occurred, Xinhua’s news agency reported.
In October 2013, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Aegean Sea, off Izmir.It killed 117 people and injured over 1,000.
