20 Andhra legislative council members facing criminal cases

Amaravati 8th August : As as high as 42 percent of the members of the Legislative Council of Andhra Pradesh are being investigated for criminal charges A recent study has found.The study also found that 75 percent of the MLCs whose files were scrutinized are crorepatis or have assets worth more than 1 crore.
The research is based on information provided by MLCs in advance of the MLC polls which are held periodically.

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) as well as Andhra Pradesh Election Watch stated on Monday that they looked into the details of 48 of of the 58 currently sitting MLCs.

“Ten MLCs were not studied because their affidavits are not available.Eight nominees for MLCs aren’t required to file their affidavits.

Therefore, their financial, criminal and other details is not accessible in the public domain,” an ADR release said.

Of the 48 MLC affidavits analyzed 20 MLCs, (42 percent) have declared criminal charges against themselves.3 MLCs, or 6 percent are facing serious criminal charges.One MLC has declared a case relating to attempting to murder according to IPC Section 307 and one MLC has declared a case relating to crimes committed against women.

at least 13 of of 26 MLCs who are from YSRCP 6 out of 13 MLCs from TDP and one of the four Progressive Democratic Front MLCs have declared themselves guilty of a crime in their declarations of guilt.

The study also revealed that 75 percent (or 36%) of the 48 MLCs are crorepatis.

While 22 MLCs are part of the ruling YSRCP while the opposition TDP has 11 crorepatis in the Upper House.The TDP’s Lokesh Babu is the richest of the group with declared assets of more than 369 crore rupees.Independent member P.Raghu Varma declared the lowest assets of 1 84,527 rupees.
