2 Patanjali TV channels stir controversy in Nepal

Kathmandu 21 November : .Two TV channels that Ramdev, a yoga guru in Nepal, owns have been controversially operated illegally.
Sher Bahadur deuba, Acharaya Balkrishna, and other high-ranking leaders from major political parties, launched two new channels, Aastha Nepal TV, and Patanjali Nepal TV, at a Friday function.

According to the Nepali law, foreign investment in media sectors is forbidden.

Gogon Bahadur Hamal, director general, Department of Information and Broadcasting stated that they haven’t received any request to register the two channels.

We have established an investigative team to examine the registration of television channels.

We will investigate if they broadcast without our approval.

Multi-national corporation Patanjali is believed to have invested in two channels, where Acharaya and Ramdev Balkrishna were the principal promoters.

According to Nepali law foreign investment in the media and film industries is prohibited.

However, any international television station that needs to be operated from Nepal must have met all legal requirements.

Prime Minister Deuba assured the audience that he would provide land to Patanjali in order for him to be able for medical purposes.

These channels are part of the latest venture by Patanjali Group.

Patanjali was founded by Acharya Balakrishna, in 2006.It started as an Ayurveda medication manufacturing company.

Later it expanded to include clothing (Patanjali Paridhan), dairy products (Patanjali Daary), and other food items.

It isn’t the first time that Patanjali products have been controversially landed in Nepal.

In June of this year, the Himalayan nation banned Coronil kits.

The Ministry of Health and Population and Department of Health in Nepal placed a ban on the use of coronil kits until they were registered at the Department according to Government of Nepal rules.
