United Nations, New York, Nov 20, : , Some 2.3 Million Somalians, 18% of total population are affected by severe water, food, and pasture shortages.A UN spokesperson warned.
Stephane Dujarric spoke for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and said, “From Somalia the federal government together with the humanitarian community on Friday stated that they were alarmed by the rapidly worsening drought.”

He said that waterborne diseases are on the increase due to a lack of safe, potable drinking water.

The spokesperson stated that Somalia is at the forefront of climate change.

She has been through more than 30 climate-related disasters since 1990.This includes 12 droughts, and 19 floods.

In search of water, food and pasture, nearly 1,000,000 people fled their homes in the central and southern regions.According to Xinhua, 70% of Somalis are below the poverty level.

The country’s population is expected to grow by 30%, rising from approximately 5.9 million people in 2018 to 7.7 million in 2022.

Adam Abdelmoula (UN Deputy Special Representative for the Secretary General) stated that Somalia is experiencing a “severe storm.”

Abdelmoula, who is also a resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator, said that the affected had already been through decades of conflict and climatic shocks, as well as disease outbreaks.

These needs are being addressed by authorities, local communities and the United Nations.

However, only 20% of the critical areas like sanitation and water are funded.

The 2021 Somalia Humanitarian Response Plan has only 66% funding, with one month left in the year.

The UN Central Emergency Response Fund has allocated $8 million, while the Somalia Humanitarian Fund has a $6 million reserve.
