Bowling first, Proteas skipper Dean Elgar unleashed a four-prong attack, ably led by Kagiso Rabada, who was recalled to the side following an injury layoff, in cloudy skies at Lord’s.

Rabada was the first to speak up by bouncing the ball to keep England’s openers in control.

Alex Lees was the first to fall, taking Rabada through to the wicketkeeper, only to then be sent off for five. The other partner of Alex Lees, Zak Crawley was also dismissed shortly after, as Rabada struck once more.

The bowler was able to find the outside of the right-hander when Crawley offered Aiden Markram a simple chance in the slip cordon. Then, Marco Jansen found prodigious swings and one of those, a slender inswinger that had Joe Root trapped in front.

With Root gone, South Africa were on the top of proceedings and they increased the advantage to the next level after Anrich Nortje, following two costly overs ended up sending Jonny Bairstow England’s top batter of the summer back to his path with one that was angled in to get Bairstow’s bat out, and then remove the stumps.

Pope was the top of England batters on display playing with ease both on the both sides of the field, as well as taking advantage of South Africa’s quicks for runs, bringing him to a top half-century.

Skipper Ben Stokes stepped up to provide Pope company, and the stand seemed to make England behind in the game, until Nortje struck again.

Stokes took a shot up to slip number three at the time of lunch to take off for 20 points and take off from England with a score of 100/5.

Nortje added to England’s woes after lunch by getting one into Ben Foakes to clean him up.Nortje took 50 wickets in Test cricket in the 13th Test with the scalp.

Rain however caused a halt to South Africa’s stellar bowling performance. What seemed to be a light shower at first then became a torrential downpour as the hopes of more action in the afternoon became bleak and the umpires eventually took the players out.

Brief Scores: England 116/6 (Pope 61 not out; Nortje 3-43, Rabada 2-36, Jansen 1-18) vs South Africa
