Rohit Vemula, the 25 year old student, who was pursuing PHD from Hyderabad University, committed suicide on the note of the disciplinary action taken against him by the Government of India, resulting in his suspension.His suicide was blown out of proportion by many leaders for political gains as it came under SC/ST atrocities Act.BJP leaders like Bandaru Dattatreya were alleged of the responsibility of the suicide.
To arrest the alleged persons and determine if the case stands in the court for the law/act.
So Guntur Collector was ordered to determine the caste of Rohit Vemula if he is Dalit or belongs to some other caste.Collector, Kanti Lal Dande, first confirmed that Rohit is a Dalit but he took a U-turn on the claim and said a deeper investigation needs to be done on the matter.
Collector claims that there were two reports on the matter; One by Guntur District Administration and another by Gujarala District, where his father belongs.While Guntur Administration confirmed that he belongs to Mala caste, report from Gujarala District claimed that he belongs to OBC category.
Well, is this a game played by officials to save the leaders or does Rohit belong to Dalit? Time will decide in the due course.
