The average entertainment tax in India is around 30% – 35%.The biggest movie markets in southern India, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have considerably low tax rates and low ticket prices in that order.

But the central government brought this uniform tax rate system in the form of GST.As announced earlier, entertainment tax (GST) in India was supposed to be 28% everywhere, irrespective of languages and size of markets. This would really harm regional cinema. But after few notable southern personalities including KTR and Kamal Haasan have expressed thier disappointment on heavy tax imposition on regional cinema, the government of India has finally acted flexible.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday announced the new road map of GST on cinema. The GST will remain the same 28% for movie tickets costing above Rs.100 (nett). The government to charge 18% GST on movie tickets ranging below Rs.100 (nett). In other words, ticket rates under Rs.120 (actual price 100 + 18% GST + Rs.2 Miscellaneous) will fall under 18% GST.
