Balachander, 84, died at a private hospital here Tuesday following prolonged illness and age-related ailments.Popularly known as KB, he was instrumental in launching the careers of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth and other popular actors such as Prakash Raj, Sujatha and Saritha.

Balachander directed 101 Films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi Film Industries.‘Neer Kumizhi’ (1965) marks his directorial debut and ‘Abaddam’ was his last movie.He won as many as 9 National awards apart from Dada Saheb Phalke and Padma Shri awards

Rajinikanth, who paid homage to his guru, said he was like his “father”.Celebrities expressed their grief at the loss of a legendary figure on Twitter.
