STORY

Keeping it very simple, the story of Baahubali goes like this.“Devasena (Anushkha) is prisoned by Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati) in the kingdom of Maahishmathi.Bhallaladeva is the son of Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan) and Bijjaladeva (Nasser).

There is a group of people who are trying to save Devasena from Bhallaladeva. One fine day, Sivudu (Prabhas) comes to rescue Devasena.

After a series of incidents, Sivudu comes to know about his family and realizes that Devasena is his mother.

What is the past of Sivudu?

Who is Amarendra Baahubali?

Why did Bhallaladeva prisoned Devasena?

The answers for the above questions cook up the plot for the first part of the film Baahubali – The Beginning.

REVIEW

Before analyzing anything, let us begin with the hype that surrounded the film. The film which is made on a grand scale like never before on the screen of Indian Cinema is the talk of the town everywhere.

The entire nation is eagerly waiting for the creation of Rajamouli. The film released in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi today.

Baahubali The Beginning created many records in the advance ticket bookings and also the much talked film in the recent times.Generally, when such a magnum opus is in production, people will have curiosity and moreover if directors like Rajamouli is handling it, there will be much more attention to it.As said by Rajamouli and his father, the film was cooked up with strong characterizations.Rajamouli designed every character in a way that we travel with them and feel that they are real.We are very much connected to them.In films like Baahubali, this must be a mandatory factor. But the story that connects all these characters is what that decides the success of the film.
Reminding the fact that the film already completed required business and with positive talk all over, it is certain that Baahubali will be a huge Blockbuster at the Box office.

But this is not that is expected from Jakkanna. This period film is completely based on imagination and Rajamouli is successful in bringing his imagination to real but he failed to tight the story and screenplay that we might not enjoy this period film like that of our own all time classics made by NTR and ANR.Don’t tell that Rajamouli is our generation director and this story is narrated in a way to connect today’s generation.Because, period films always carry their USP that they attract anyone if served properly.

Rajamouli said that Baahubali is a tribute to Mahabharatha. We should not compare this film with the epic but the primary goal of this film is the essence of Mahabharatha. The battle between brothers over kingdom. We have heard these kind of stories from our childhood and many of us might have imagined the war scenes, palaces, kingdoms and many more. After all, it doesn’t cost for imagination.Rajamouli spent crores to bring it to real and thanks to production designer Sabu Cyril and VFX Supervisor Srinivas Mohan and his team for offering a visual wonder.

Baahubali is definitely a very rare and outstanding attempt.Technically, the film has reached the Hollywood standards and there is no point in criticizing that front but the interesting way of narrating the story and the slow paced screenplay will certainly bring yawns.

Rana Daggubati has given an outstanding performance in every scene he acted.
This is his career best performance and you’ll love him for sure.

And personally I felt that it was Rana who stole the show and Prabhas is excellent throughout the film.As Shivudu and Amarendra Baahubali, he has given wonderful performance.

He has spent almost three years of time on this film and his dedication is crystal clear in every frame.Tamannah Bhatia is okay in her role as this is first time for her to essay this kind of role.

The scenes between Tamannah and Prabhas is little boring.Anushkha Shetty is also very good in the film and she is limited to few scenes as her role plays key role in second part.

Nasser as Bijjaladeva is good and Satyaraj as Kattappa is brilliant again.Satyaraj played a very very important character and the way he performed will surely impress everyone and his role is also prominent in the film.Adivi Sesh is fine. The rest of the actors are ok in their limited roles. The film starts in an interesting way and takes time to get into the point. From this time to Shivudu reaching Maahishmathi Kingdom, it is just average as the film never gets into the story.

But the pre-interval and interval scenes are the highlights in the first half. The second half also picks pace and moves interestingly and it is fine with interesting flashback episodes.

Ramya Krishnan has given a solid performance in the film.Especially, her scenes in second half came out very well.

The war episodes were shot very well but it impresses us partly. The starting and ending of the episodes were good.

In between, there is an item song where Rajamouli also makes a special entry and yes, the director also followed item song formula here!!
The second half of the film dominates the first half but still the second half does not leaves any big impression on us except for the climax twist. The abrupt ending of the film is needed here but the makers could have ended the film in a little more convincingmanner.

Technically, the film is very rich and the film was made with high standards. The cinematography by Senthil Kumar is at top notch.

The music composed by Keeravani is already a super hit.But only few songs are good on screen. There are people who are going out during the songs in theatres. The background score needs a special mention. The sound designing, mixing was brilliant.Keeravani elevated many key scenes in the film with his BGM and it is really a great feeling to experience it! Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao’s editing could be crisper.

There are few drags in the film especially in the first half. Also, the film slows down at some point and it is like going up and going down.
The flow is not constant. You excite for a scene and then falls down with the same speed you got excited. The production values are grand. On a while, Baahubali The Beginning is a very good experience. The film makers have concentrated more on the technical side of the film but thrown a poor light on the story and screenplay. In films like Baahubali which is being directed by Rajamouli, you expect it to be very engaging and interesting every second but it has ups and downs with some wow moments as well as hmmmm feelings.

But still, the film is not at all a bad one.It is disappointing as it fails to reach the hype and the expectations that are generally been kept on An SS Rajamouli film. Also it is frustrating because the film could have been a lot better!
